Manufacturing Process of PVC Raw Materials

2023-09-13
The manufacturing process of PVC raw materials involves several stages, starting from the extraction of the base materials to the production of the final PVC resin. Let's take a closer look at the various steps involved.

The first step is the extraction of ethylene, which is obtained from natural gas or petroleum through a process called cracking. This involves breaking down the hydrocarbon molecules into smaller components, including ethylene. The ethylene is then purified to remove impurities before being used in the polymerization process.

The next step is the production of vinyl chloride monomers. Ethylene and chlorine gas are reacted together in a controlled environment, typically at high temperatures and pressures, to form vinyl chloride monomers. This process, known as the chlorination reaction, is essential for the formation of PVC.

Once the vinyl chloride monomers are produced, they undergo a process called polymerization. This involves combining the monomers under specific conditions, such as the presence of a catalyst, to form long chains of PVC molecules. The resulting PVC resin is then cooled and solidified into various forms, such as pellets or powders, which can be further processed based on the desired application.
